Achieve Optimal Gum Health with Periodontal Dental Scaling

Vital Dental understands the importance of optimal gum health to oral and overall health. So, if you have gum disease, Dr. Mitul Patel and the team offer periodontal scaling in Sarasota, Florida, to remove unwanted bacteria and calcified deposits beneath the gum line and allow your infected gums to heal. Dental scaling is a non-surgical procedure, but it’s effective in helping you achieve healthy, infection-free gums.

Why do I need periodontal scaling?

Gum disease starts when you fail to brush and floss your teeth properly. Poor oral hygiene causes a buildup of unwanted bacteria in the mouth, which inflames the gum tissues. This inflammation causes gingivitis—the earliest and mildest of gum disease. At the gingivitis stage, the infection remains at the surface of the gums. However, when you fail to treat gingivitis, the infection spreads beneath the gum line, causing gum tissues to pull away (recede) from the teeth. Gum recession creates deep periodontal pockets that can’t be cleaned with home dental tools.

Periodontal scaling involves using special tools to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth’s surface and the deep pockets. Without scaling, the infection spreads and can cause tooth loss and systematic issues.

What should I expect from dental scaling?

The process starts with a consultation with Dr. Patel to examine your gums. The doctor may use a periodontal probe to determine the depth of your pockets. If the pockets are too deep, digital x-rays may be required to determine if there is bone loss.

Before your treatment, the dentist numbs your gums with local anesthesia, so you’ll experience little to no pain during treatment. Depending on the extent of your infection, we may treat each half of the mouth (sometimes a quadrant) during each visit. This staged treatment allows you to use the other half of your mouth between appointments.

After treatment, you’ll experience mild pain, swelling, and bruising. These symptoms are normal and should improve within the next few days. However, we’ll give you pain medications and antibiotics to manage pain and prevent reinfections. Besides, we’ll provide you with home remedies for a seamless recovery.

Your dentist will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your treatment progress. In most cases, periodontal scaling is all you need to get your condition under control. However, if you aren’t responding to treatment, the dentist will recommend periodontal surgery to restore your gum health.

How is periodontal scaling different from traditional scale and polish?

Professional teeth cleaning is preventive, and your dentist recommends it every six months. During this procedure, built-up plaque and tartar are removed from the surface of the teeth and just below the gum line.

We recommend periodontal cleaning when gum disease has already formed. Dental scaling is more thorough than standard cleanings and is often completed in more than two visits under anesthesia. Dental scaling not only removes unwanted deposits from the tooth surface but also from the root surface.
