In the past, extraction was the obvious choice for an infected tooth. However, advanced root canal procedures enable dentists to preserve your tooth safely and painlessly, relieving discomfort and preventing costly replacements.
Sensitivity, pain, and discoloration indicate that you may need a root canal. If you’re in Sarasota, Florida, schedule an appointment with Vital Dental, where Dr. Mitul Patel employs advanced techniques to achieve outstanding results.

The treatment typically involves 1-3 visits, from consultation to restoration. During your initial visit, we’ll examine your tooth with dental X-rays to determine the extent of damage. Then, we’ll anesthetize your gums to ensure a painless experience. Our pain management techniques are highly effective, so you don’t have to worry about discomfort. You’ll only experience slight pressure as the dentist works on your tooth.
Next, the dentist places a rubber dam to keep the tooth dry and free from contamination. A small hole is then made at the top to access the pulp chamber. Using this access hole, the dentist will remove the diseased tissues and thoroughly clean the area until all the infection is gone. Don’t worry about the missing pulp. The pulp’s primary role—providing nutrients and sensation—is crucial only during the tooth’s development. Once fully grown, a tooth can function seamlessly without the pulp.
After cleaning and reshaping your tooth, the dentist will seal it with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material. Finally, we’ll restore the tooth with a dental filling. However, if your tooth is severely damaged or decayed, the dentist will repair it with a dental crown to prevent future cracks or fractures. As long as you care for your tooth with brushing, flossing, and bi-annual dental check-ups, your treated tooth can last a lifetime.
The doctor suggests a root canal because there’s already a problem. So, if you ignore a root canal, the consequences can be severe. Some include:
